Windsor History

Windsor is best known for its Royal Castle, it has now been the favoured home of the British Monarchy for almost a thousand years, and is still the most inhabited castle in the World.

Windsor is situated 25 Km West of London, in the heart of the beautiful Thames Valley, and in the County of Royal Berkshire. Situated across the river from Eton, it has now become one of the most visited towns for tourists, outside of London. Popular with day trippers, and for those who wish to escape to the country, and get-away from the hustle and bustle of our Capital City.

Initially built on the site of a Celtic camp, supposedly where King Arthur once lived.  Legend even says that the Round Table stood at the top of the Motte of the Round Tower.  The perfect river spot was chosen by William the Conqueror in 1066, mainly as a defensive wooden Motte and Bailey castle to initially protect the western fringes of London.

It wasn't until a couple of generations later that it replaced the Towns name from Old Windsor, to New Windsor, when the Royal Palace  was rebuilt out of stone in the 12th and 13th century. In the 20th Century, it is now just known as Windsor, Royal Berkshire.

A centre for Royal patronage and trade, the settlement of Windsor (meaning "Winch-furnished-Riverbank" - transferred from Old Windsor to New Windsor. The town quickly grew between the Castle and the Thames.

It held a Market, dating before 1261, giving New Windsor status as an early town, and free Borough Status was granted in 1277. As well as the new advantages gained from this charter it also brought unwanted residents to the town. A County Gaol was set up in Windsor, which local people objected to for over 30 years. This dissatisfaction came to an end in 1309 when the unsavoury inmates broke free, with some seeking sanctuary in the local Parish Church. Most however, were captured, and either killed or hanged before King Edward 11 decided to remove the prison to Reading, when he occupied the Throne.
