Windsor Castle

Windsor Castle is the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the World. It has stood 100 foot above the River Thames for more than 900 years and is today the favourite home of Her Majesty the Queen and the Royal family. The castle contains about 1,000 rooms and occupies over of 13 acres of land.

First constructed as a Wooden Motte and Bailey castle by William the Conqueror. In 1649 a parliament bill, proposed to demolish Windsor Castle, but fortunately was defeated by one single vote. It was then neglected and declared inhabitable before being transformed into a luxurious palace as seen today. It has since survived two World Wars but was then very nearly destroyed by an accidental fire in 1992

Despite countless additions and alterations the outer walls and the central mound of the castle are still in the same position as those of the original castle built by William the Conqueror. It was considered a day's march from the Tower of London and was initially designed to guard the western approaches to London the capital of England.

When the Queen is in residence the Round Tower proudly displays the Royal Standard Flag, when she is not in residence, it is replaced with the Union Flag, sometimes this goes up and down five or six times a day.

Windsor Castle consists of three "wards" - the upper ward , the middle ward and the lower ward.

The lower ward houses St. George's Chapel

The upper ward contains the royal apartments and grand state rooms
